History of the crisis intervention unit(CIU)
The Tom Green Sheriff's Crisis Intervention Unit was formed in 1999 with a grant from VOCA (Victims of Crime Act). The administration at the Tom Green County Sheriff's Office noted that a large number of victims were not able to access services. By being allowed to respond to the scene, we are able to get information and resources to those victims that might otherwise not receive the assistance they need. Stewart Dickson and Steve Mild saw a similar program in Midland and wrote the grant to get a Crisis Intervention Unit started in Tom Green County. In 1999, Rita Guthrie was hired and built an amazing program that has helped thousands of people over the years and is much needed in today's society.
